- **Finality.** No node reorganises the main chain below the last stored spine checkpoint (see [[finality-and-rollback]]).
- **Fast sync.** A new node syncs the spine first: its manifests say which snapshot to fetch, and its key changes say which node keys to trust (see [[snapshots-and-fast-sync]]).
+ - **The archive.** The decentralised storage, not every node, keeps every snapshot from block zero, so anyone can walk the spine back to any past snapshot and rebuild the state of that time (see [[the-archive]]).
The spine is kept by every node, not by the Foundation, and nothing is traded on it.
> [!design] **Planned design.** When more than half the seats are gone for good, a release may carry a spine restart record (the last good spine block and a signer list). It is accepted only after the spine has been stuck for a week and the release has passed the registry's veto window.

> [!design] **Planned design.** If several chains come to share one spine, a chain's checkpoint and snapshots will enter a shared spine block only with the signatures of two thirds of that chain's own nodes.
